The color red in Heart Eyes isn’t just a nod to romance—it also foreshadows the bloodshed that lurks beneath its charming exterior. What begins as a playful rom-com quickly veers into slasher territory, intertwining love and horror in a way that feels both unexpected and thrilling.

Olivia Holt stars as Ally, a hopeless romantic turned cynic, who finds herself entangled with Mason Gooding’s Jay Simmons—an ambitious, starry-eyed dreamer. Their chemistry drives the film, embracing all the classic rom-com tropes, only to have them disrupted by a mysterious killer whose motives appear to be rooted in an obsessive disdain for love. The result? A genre-bending film that could just as easily be called a slasher disguised as a romantic comedy—or vice versa.

What makes Heart Eyes stand out is its commitment to both genres. The film leans into its flirty banter, playful yet subversive character arcs, and clever dialogue while never shying away from brutal, thematically relevant kills. The dynamic detective duo, played by Jordana Brewster (Jeanine Shaw) and Devon Sawa (Zeke Hobbs), further cements its slasher foundation, ensuring that Heart Eyes remains as much a murder mystery as it is a love story.

By fully embracing both romance and horror—rather than parodying them—Heart Eyes delivers a fresh take on two beloved genres, proving that love and death can, in fact, go hand in hand.
